SUMMARY:HAROLD HOPKINS SYMPOSIUM
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is an opportunity to appreciate the work of Professor Harold Hopkins FRS – a remarkable optical physicist whose work changed the world wide practice of surgery and medicine. \nPrior to 1959\, the optics of the traditional cystoscope were dreadful. After being approached by a Urologist wanting better illumination\, Hopkins improved the light transmission 80 fold by developing the Rod Lens\, transforming the image quality and opening the door to all minimally invasive short stay surgery. \nAlso responsible for introducing the CVD reader\, Hopkins published the first coherent image transmitted through a fibreoptic bundle\, paving the way for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic fibre optic endoscopy. \nBook a place at this free event to learn about Hopkins’ contribution to medicine. You’ll explore the history and evolution of the instruments that are now used routinely in the most intricate of operations. Click here for more information.

SUMMARY:UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF MINIMAL ACCESS SURGERY
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of Cambridge Medical Robotics\, we’re delighted to invite you to a panel discussion entitled\, ‘Unlocking the potential of minimal access surgery – a conversation on the challenges and opportunities for greater MAS adoption in the UK’. \nMinimal Access Surgery can have innumerable benefits for patients. However\, uptake remains relatively low. Unlocking the potential of minimal access surgery\, a leading event in central London will examine how we can increase the uptake of minimal access surgery and address the barriers to adoption of the latest innovations in the NHS. \nThe discussion will be led by an expert panel of thought-leaders in surgery\, including Amjad Parvaiz\, Professor of Surgery at Poole General Hospital\, and Prokar Dasgupta\, Professor of Robotic Surgery & Urological Innovation\, King’s College London. \nThis event is taking place at one of London’s newest landmark buildings\, the Francis Crick Institute on Tuesday 20th March 2018 between 18:00-21:00\, registration and attendance is free. To register attendance and see who will be speaking click here. The Francis Crick Institute is next door to Kings Cross St. Pancras. \nFor further information\, and if you’d like to register\, please click here. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the event.

SUMMARY:ALSGBI SW CHAPTER MEETING
DESCRIPTION:ALSGBI SW CHAPTER MEETING\nFRIDAY 14TH JULY 2017 | 6 HOURS CPD\nCurrent issues with training and assessment for laparoscopic surgery\nSince its origins in the 1980s\, the laparoscopic approach has spread to all surgical specialties\, with an ever increasing list of procedures\, novel instrumentation and techniques. Alongside the need to ensure that these developments are adopted in a safe and reliable manner\, the challenge for surgical staff to keep up to date can seem insurmountable. \nCountless studies have recommended the use of box trainers\, virtual reality simulators and cadaveric models but the access to such facilities is very variable. Financial pressures within the NHS are having a significant impact on the provision of training facilities\, the funding of courses and availability of staff to cover study leave. Healthcare companies are also feeling the pinch and the impact of more stringent regulation on their financial support for education and training is adding to the pressure. \nHow can we meet these challenges for surgeons and allied staff who need to provide a safe and effective laparoscopic surgical service in the future? What is the future for technology enhanced learning for laparoscopy and how can we improve expert coaching in the clinical setting? We hope to discuss and debate these issues at this meeting – please join us and share your views. \nAlso at this event\, we will be offering core surgical trainees the opportunity of hands on practice for the LapPass skills\, with assessment stations available so that individuals can work towards their Laparoscopic Passport. \n  \nDownload flyer \n  \nFind out more and book online at www.swstncic.org
